The comedy South Wind by Split-based director Ante Marin is heading on a major summer tour of open-air cinemas in August, with the director attending screenings. FMFS also brings two outstanding Mediterranean premieres: the Italian drama Vermiglio and the Spanish dystopian thriller Artificial Justice.
The vivid black comedy by writer-director Ante Marin, which premiered at the Pula Film Festival, is already breaking audience records at Split’s Bačvice Open-Air Cinema. As the South wind (Južina) shakes the city, the lives of residents in a dilapidated four-storey building begin to intertwine. A suspended professor, a paranoid elderly woman, a manipulative religious mother, an unsuccessful rapper and a violent ex-boyfriend collide in a dark comedy of misunderstandings, petty schemes and escalating chaos, where even the “heroes” are villains in the eyes of their neighbours.
Direct from the Italian Alps comes the acclaimed film Vermiglio, nominated for an Academy Award. Set in a remote mountain village in northern Italy at the end of the Second World War, the film follows the large family of a village schoolteacher. The arrival of Pietro, a Sicilian deserter, and his intense relationship with the teacher’s eldest daughter will change the course of life for the entire family. In a paradoxical twist of fate, the family loses its peace at the very moment the world finally finds it. Breathtaking Alpine landscapes enhance this powerful story of love, loss and resilience.
Artificial Justice is an intriguing Spanish political thriller that tackles a highly topical issue increasingly dividing public opinion, questioning the limits of the use of artificial intelligence. In the near future, the government plans to replace judges with AI software in order to improve the efficiency and impartiality of court rulings. Renowned judge Carmen Costa is invited to test the new system and give her opinion on its implementation, but soon realises she has become entangled in a dangerous story involving powerful figures with questionable interests.
