30 cities. 102 films. 517 screenings. 23.561 visitors. (2016.)
Kino Mediteran is the project of cinema revival in Dalmatia that aims to renew movie theaters and bring movie screenings to smaller towns in Dalmatia where cinemas have been closed for a long time.
The project is on at the moment in 30 towns, and it is functioning during the entire year in Bol, Hvar, Imotski, Jelsa, Kaštela, Komiža, Lastovo, Omiš, Ploče and Pirovac.
In other host towns, the programme is usually on during the summer, and a few times in the winter. The long term goal of the project is to include more locations in cinematic network that functions the entire year. The dynamic of screenings depends from town to town, and it is possible to organise them in a period of a few days or screenings on a weekly or monthly basis.
Kino Mediteran offers an insight to the locals into the movies of European and world cinematography, and what is more important, it opens the door of their cinema at least for a couple of days. Including children movies in our programme, we enabled our youngest audience to come to the cinema for the first time. Kino Mediteran, besides distributing its own films, cooperates with other Croatian distributers and a great number of film festivals and in that way gives to the audience new and attractive movie programme.
Since no other cultural summer project offered to the host towns a movie programme, we wanted to give our contribution to the development of Dalmatian cultural tourism by doing this. Making bilingual subtitles in a summer season, we make it possible for foreign guests to enjoy the screenings, and the result is that they make 30% of the audience during the season.
Thanks to the great results and a greater number of audience and thanks to the excellent cooperation with local partners, in March 2015 through the competition of Ministry of Culture we digitalised successfully Bol, Hvar, Imotski and Komiža. It is important to mention that besides the town of Korcula, at the moment of starting the project, there were no other host towns digitalised, therefore this is a really important project for Dalmatia. In 2016 we digitalised Supetar and equiped Jelsa and Lastovo and in 2017 we equiped Goveđari on Mljet island.
In 2012 first Kino Mediteran had 33 screenings in 11 towns and it attracted 4000 satisfied viewers, and in 2013 in its 2nd edition, there were 14 host towns, 41 screenings and 7000 viewers. The 4th edition 2015 was finalised with a fantastic result of 19.500 viewers that saw 370 movie screenings in 25 towns.
Kino Mediteran is a shared project of Mediterranean Film Festival Split and all other host towns that help us with their sponsorship to organise our project successfully.
